DMVF Architects were asked to refurbish and extend an original 19th Century mews type building with a bright contemporary extension which blended seamlessly internally with the original mews building. A new stairwell with an internal courtyard was introduced in between the original house and the extension. The courtyard allows for additional natural light in both the old and new parts of the house throughout the day, while also allowing views of the original stonework from the kitchen and dining area in the extension.
A mezzanine library area was introduced over the double height living space which allows views of the park at the front of the house, while also providing south light into the living area. A sunken outdoor terrace area with an integrated external fireplace was created in the rear garden area immediately outside the new extension to provide additional external living and dining areas.
